Daw Ohn (M.A.) is the first Head of the department from 1947 to 1958. She became the professor in the year 1958. She retired from 1966. At that time the name of the department was Buddhistic Studies.
Dr. Zaw Tun was the second professor of the department from 1966 to 1969. Here, the name of the department turned to Pali Department. U Tin Lwin was appointed as professor in 1969. At about 1977, the department was renamed as Oriental Studies. After his transfer to Yangon University in 1986, Daw Khin Khin Hlaing became Lecture/Head of the Department till 1988.
Then, Daw Tin Tin Myint accepted the professorship from 1988 to 1989. After her retirement. U Shwe from 1990 to 1993, U Ba Sann from 1993 to 1995 and Daw Mya Sint from 1995 and 1996 led the department as Associate professor and Head respectively.
Professor U Han Tint from 1996 to 2007 led the department as Professor and Head. Professor Dr.U Myat Nyunt from 2007 to 2011 led the department as Professor and Head respectively. Recently professor Dr. Daw Khin Myint Myint is leading the department.
